Our DivisionOur Division is located in Bridgeport, Pennsylvania in Montgomery County and was established in 1990.
Our Story: A group of us Irish ladies were toying with the idea of starting our own LAOH division. The idea got stronger when we were invited to march with the newly formed local AOH division in the Philadelphia Saint Patrick's Day parade in 1989. After the parade, which was an absolute blast, we attended a beef and beer event held by a Philadelphia division. We met quite a few amazing women who already belonged to various Philadelphia divisions. We asked a lot of questions-a lot of questions! After that we put the word out to our Irish friends and family which generated a lot of interest. We had our first meeting at the Goodwill Fire Company in Bridgeport, PA and decided to go for it- start our own division. We owe our sisters from Philadelphia our thanks for their help and guidance. They introduced us to the state board and helped us understand exactly what we had to do and then helped us do it. We wanted to emphasize that we were not in AUXILIARY! We briefly toyed with the idea of T-shirts that said “we don't do roast beef!”. Our memberships stepped up right away. As we all know, you can't get a bunch of Irishmen together without raising money. Sisters took to their crochet and knitting needles, sewing machines, etc. providing us with beautiful items to raffle. We had a gift/talent for selling tickets. We honed our skills in making Irish Potatoes, Shepherds Pies, and baked goods to a fine art. Our division makes a strong showing at parades with up to 40 members marching in uniform. We celebrate Saint Brigid's feast day and honor Our Lady of Knock with all our sisters from the Montgomery County divisions. We attend AOH Memorial Masses and Communion breakfasts. We work with the AOH nN various fundraising projects to benefit our organization. We participate in the Irish History Writing Contest and we grant an annual scholarship to a high school senior to help with college expenses. We are proud of all our sisters. Proud of all the charitable work done over the years. We are proud of our donations to national and local charities and members in need. Proud of the friendships we have built and the support we show for each other. Notre Dame Division 2 is 80 members strong and we hope to grow that number in 2020 and beyond. Thank you to Marialice Powers, First Division President ND#2, for the telling of our early history. |
